Abstract:
This talk aims to present a short introduction to data science and business intelligence disciplines and demonstrate their application to support business modeling and benchmarking. A business intelligence platform for “advising” SMEs (Small Medium Enterprise) referred to as “SMEs Clinic” will be outlined.

About the lecturer:
Prof. Elias Houstis is currently an emeritus professor at the University of Thessaly, Greece, and Purdue University, USA. He is among the founders of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department of Thessaly University and served as its Head and Associate Head. He was instrumental in establishing the Center for Research & Technology- Thessaly directed it for several years. Most of his academic career abroad is associated with the Computer Science Department of Purdue University, USA. He served as a Full Professor, Head and Associate Head, and Director of the Computational Science & Engineering (CS&E) Program of Purdue University. Dr. Houstis was the chairman of the National Council for Research and Technology Division for “Information and Telecommunication Systems” and a member of the European “National ICT Research Directors Forum.” Dr. Houstis was a full professor of Aristotelian University and the University of Patras, Greece. His research spans various fields of CS&E and particularly the software engineering of simulation-based engineering science and AI-based scientific problem-solving environments. Currently, he teaches undergraduate courses in Statistics, Problem-Solving Environments for Data Science, Machine Learning for big data, and Robotics. He has directed 24 Ph.D. students in Greece and the USA.
He strongly believes in the following assertion by Albert Einstein, the German theoretical physicist:
“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”
